John and Kelly have been in ministry together since day one. They met in college at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. It was in those days that God began preparing John for what would become a life calling and preparing Kelly to come along beside John to be a true compliment, in every way necessary, for what He desired to do in and through them. Quickly after marriage, God used John and Kelly, with a handful of close ministry friends, to begin a camp and conference ministry called TWOTWENTY. Based on Galatians 2:20, the call to thousands upon thousands of people has been ‘to be crucified with Christ… dead to self, raised to walk in resurrection power.’ Mostly geared towards students, they began to see just how powerfully God would use this ministry in the lives of all ages.
Through many seasons of life, many opportunities through leading worship, writing music, teaching, as well as many churches that John would partner with for certain ministry initiatives, John found himself knowing there was more. It was while serving on staff in 2003 that God confirmed a call to pastor. John knew there was a difference between God’s calling and God’s timing, so he waited. This would begin a season of waiting for 12 years, until one lunch meeting would begin to unfold this new chapter of life and ministry. It was at that meeting that a pastor that John respected greatly, Jeff Wells, challenged John in the area of planting a church, offering help to see this dream become a reality. After months of faithfully continuing to serve where God had them, John and Kelly found themselves at a place where there was no other real option – the calling and timing had aligned. It was in this season of early 2015 that there was a surrender to this new work. This was harder than it seemed for John, who for the last 18 years had been mostly an itinerant minister, worship leader, recording artist, song writer, and communicator. It was another moment of dying to self, laying the last 18 years on an altar, offering to allow God to quite possibly even crucify that old ministry life John had known, so to raise up something new in resurrected power.
Today, John and Kelly are both excited to see what God will do through this new work called, “Declaration Church.” True to heart, there’s a real passion to see the generations reached and empowered to ministry. This is similar to what the ministry has always been about, but the most exciting thing to John and Kelly now is that this ministry gets to happen everyday, for the whole family, through a life giving church, which they believe to be the hope of the world. Declaration comes from many moments in life where they had to choose to declare the goodness and greatness of God, no matter what life’s circumstances held. But most importantly, Psalm 145:4 says “One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.” John and Kelly enjoy life with three active, amazingly talented boys, Jadon (13), Jack (9), and Kyle (8).
